Tale of Two Wolves

Cherokee Legend: Two Wolves Within

An old Cherokee is teaching his grandson about life. “A fight is going on inside me,” he said to the boy. “It is a terrible fight and it is between two wolves.”

“One wolf is evil – he is anger, envy, sorrow, regret, greed, arrogance, self-pity, guilt, resentment, inferiority, lies, false pride, superiority, and ego.”

“The other wolf is good – he is joy, peace, love, hope, serenity, humility, kindness, benevolence, empathy, generosity, truth, compassion, and faith.

“The same fight is going on inside you – and inside every other person, too.”

The grandson thought about it for a minute and then asked his grandfather, “Which wolf will win?”

The old Cherokee simply replied, “The one you feed.”

This story is a great metaphor about life: the inner struggle we face between what we aspire to become and what we do not want. We all know the answer to this battle, but it takes practice, practice, practice. Every day is a new day; which one will you feed today?

I love this story. I taught it to my son last year and currently we are going over it again. It’s a fabulous tool when learning how to discern ego from spirit.
